Whenever you make a measurement, you should know how much error is allowed. You cannot make a measurement with zero error, so you should ask if a steel tape measure is a good enough instrument for house framing.
The error tolerated in house framing is on the order of one sixteenth of an inch. Usually a tape measure is capable of this sort of accuracy in most conditions.
